Case study 2 - Sarah Johnson & Wal
27th October 2008
Sarah Johnson has owned Wal, a Dutch Warmblood gelding, 16.1 hands, for nearly three years. Sarah insured Wal with Petplan Equine before she bought despite many of her friends insisting that insurance simply did not matter and it was more beneficial to put some money aside each month. However, Sarah ignored this and went with her better instinct and good job she did as in 2007 Wal's behaviour changed drastically.
Wal was rearing and stopping and could simply not be ridden. Sarah was concerned with Wal's change of character and promptly called the vet. The vet diagnosed Wal with an extremely bad back condition and forewarned of the long-road to recovery that lay ahead. In fact the vet was shocked that Wal had even let a rider sit on his back as he must have been in so much pain. However Sarah was determined to give Wal his best shot and pursued the course of treatment.
Sarah says "It would not have been possible for Wal to receive treatment if he wasn't insured with Petplan Equine. The treatment totalled £2000 and included a course of osteopathy treatment every two weeks, which Petplan Equine also covered for. This treatment along with a manipulation under general anaesthetic lasted over 12 months. It was a tough period for both Wal and myself however it was worth every moment to see Wal recover to full health."
Wal is happily back to hacking and jumping and this August Sarah and Wal had their first competition which enabled them to qualify for the Petplan Area Festivals.
