Case study 1 - Mrs L Hayward and Midoak Major

May 2009

Mrs Hayward has owned Major her 22 year old, Arab, stallion since he was 5. Major is very special to Mrs Hayward, after finding him at the end of a difficult search for the right horse Mrs Hayward found out that Major was related to her sadly missed first horse.

Mrs Hayward has been insured with Petplan Equine since 1993. From experience she knows "no matter how much you put away there's always a risk" even though Major has been retired for 5 years, his recent condition has proven Insurance is still as important.

In January 2009 when Major developed a small scab on his nostril Mrs Hayward thought it was nothing. Luckily she pointed it out to the vet when Major was having his vaccinations because tests showed that he had a form of skin cancer. Major, now feeling very sorry for him self needed laser surgery to remove the damaged cells.

Mrs Hayward says "Hopefully Major will continue to make a good recovery! He still needs some medication to prevent the cancer re occurring but the vets are positive they have removed all of the affected cells. Petplan Equine have been brilliant, Major wouldn't have had cover for this cancer if they didn't extend his insurance to cover illnesses until 25 years old. Over the 16 years I have been with Petplan Equine they have always paid my claims quickly and without quibbles. I wouldn't risk being without them."

To date Petplan Equine have paid £985.69 towards major's condition.
